Sorry, but we are not currently breeding Norwegian Forest Cats.

Before you go looking for Norwegian Forest Cat Kittens, you may wish to remind yourself about what a Norwegian Forest Cat should be like. Follow this link for our photographic interpretation of "What is a Forest Cat ? "

The following information may be worth considering before you buy a NFC or any pedigree or non pedigree cat.

It is always recommended that you visit the breeder before you even think about purchasing a cat. Do not rely solely on websites or telephone calls !! If a breeder will not let you visit them ask yourselves why not ? When you do visit leave your money and cheque book behind, it's sometimes very easy to get carried away - we know, its just what we did !! If at all possible it is best to visit a number of breeders.

Expect the breeder to ask about you, your house, who you live with, other pets, what you do and how you are going to look after the cat.

Always trust your instincts and always judge for yourself. Think about the following questions:

Is the accommodation clean; do the cats/kittens look healthy; do they appear well fed - is there some sort of food down for "free feeding"; is there water readily available; do they have easy access to a litter tray; are the cats/kittens happy; are the kittens sociable, how do they interact with the other residents of the household, do the kittens accept cuddles and want to play; were do they sleep/spend there time otherwise - have they spent their entire kitten lives in a bedroom; how many cats do they share their space with; are you left to spend anytime alone with the kittens; how does the atmosphere feel - do you feel comfortable and welcomed ? If any of the above give you cause for concern or you feel sorry for the kittens due to their circumstances walk away immediately.

If you particularly want a show cat, go to as many shows as possible - see which type/lines of cats are CONSISTENTLY winning both as kittens and as adults, and then make your choice. Remember NO breeder can guarantee a cats show success at any stage. Speak to as many show owners as you can, not just breeders. Ask as many questions about their cats as you can e.g. if they did not win - why not or if they did win - why?

If you want a cat for breeding do as much research as you can. Ask the breeders of any cats that you are interested in for a copy of the cats pedigree. Research the pedigree more than the usual 4 or 5 generation pedigree a breeder will supply you with. (See links page for pedigree database resources). Ask as many questions as you can get answers to about the cat, the cats behind it, however many generations back. If the breeder refuses to or cannot answer any legitimate questions, walk away!

Kittens are advertised in many ways - adverts in magazines, web sites, cat club web sites, cat club magazines, kitten lists and word of mouth. There is no right or wrong way to advertise kittens.

There are now 2 dedicated Clubs for Norwegian Forest Cats in the UK, and a 3rd Club with a "special interest" in them. Being a member of any Club and appearing on their "Breeders List's" does not carry any recommendations as to the quality of the breeder or their kittens. Indeed some lists are "paid for" listings. Many people are not on any "breeders list's" but are lovely people and have superb kittens. Don't forget though that there are also unscrupulous breeders in every breed and some may not be selling NFC's with registering body papers. Every breeder can supply you with a pedigree - this does NOT mean that the kitten is registered with an official body.

Pedigree kittens registered with the GCCF cannot leave home until they are 13 weeks old.

Pedigree kittens registered with FIFe can leave home at 12 weeks.

You should not be offered kittens younger than this.

Beware - It is not unknown for some breeders to "make comments" about other breeders or their cats in an attempt to sabotage reputations and prevent kitten sales - always judge for yourself by visiting the breeder or by asking for testimonials from previous kitten buyers. Ask yourself why is someone being blacklisted - does the "warning off" seem to be for genuine reasons ?

Please do not use the above as a reason not to buy a NFC, otherwise you will be missing out - they are super cats and adjust to a whole range of life styles. They are indeed a pleasure to live with.
